My Process for Building Master Chess Players

Mastery of chess is not just memorizing moves but rather the capability to think and adjust strategically. I, Zeb Fortman, a Missouri Chess Hall of Fame inductee and lifelong teacher, have over 30 years of experience as a professional chess player and coach. My tested strategy turns beginners into disciplined thinkers and advanced players into genuine competitors.
Regardless of whether you're an elementary student or a tournament competitor, here is how my process of teaching chess works:
Step 1: Getting to Know You
The initial step is a chat. I always take time to understand your goals, background, and style of learning. Whether you're starting fresh or preparing for elite competition, this initial contact ensures a customized path forward.
I carefully evaluate your current playing style and cognitive approach to the game. Unlike most programs that rely on memorization, I look at how you process positions, make decisions, and respond under pressure, laying the groundwork for meaningful improvement.
Step 2: Setting the Schedule
Once I know your starting point and end point, I will arrange a continuous lesson plan suitable for you. I conduct in-person or remote sessions depending on your whereabouts and convenience. Lessons are usually weekly and are open to all ages, from elementary school to adulthood.
Whether you seek one-on-one coaching or your child is on a school chess team, I tailor the schedule and format to meet each student. My aim is a consistent, long-term improvement based on practice, critical thinking, and reflection.
Step 3: Personalized Instruction Plan
Each student is given a tailored curriculum. Lessons are crafted to challenge your existing knowledge and develop fundamental skills in:
-
Strategic play in openings, middlegames, and endgames
-
Tactical exercises and visualization drills
-
Positional awareness and time management
-
Tournament preparation and analysis of past games
I instruct in such a manner to enable players to become well-rounded, tough competitors. My students have won State and National Championships.
Step 4: Compete and Apply Your Skills
For competition enthusiasts, I condition students for school and local chess tournaments, such as the events I host as part of my collaboration with LINC. The tournaments are accessible to K–12 players and take place four times a year, providing a supportive environment in which to try out and put into practice what you've learned. We exempt these future champions from entry fees and also serve them nutritious lunch.
I also directed a summer chess camp program for one week with an emphasis on profound strategic thought and interactive learning. All the tournaments and camps I direct are based on increasing confidence, sportsmanship, and clear thinking.
Step 5: Ongoing Growth and Mastery
As we play together, I offer ongoing feedback that refines your decision-making and reinforces your mental toughness. My instruction adapts to your level of skill, pushing you to go beyond shortcuts and play like an actual chess master.
I hear from many of my students that my lessons benefit not just their chess but also their concentration, test scores, and general problem-solving during the day. That's because I instruct the type of thinking that transfers well beyond the board.
If you want to grow as a thinker and player, I am here to help you. For most of my life, I've taught the game exclusively to the elite, and I would consider it an honor to work with you.
